About
Kharkiv National University is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe. It was founded in November 1804 in the city of Kharkiv on the initiative of the eminent educator V.N. Karazin, according to the letter of Alexander I. It is the main scientific and educational institution of Ukraine. In the ranking of the UNESCO Chair “200 largest universities in Ukraine in 2016”, the university was ranked third among Ukrainian higher education institutions. According to Scopus, the world's largest scientometric system, the university is the third-largest scientific and educational institution in Ukraine in terms of the number of articles published in major international scientific journals. According to the annual QS World University Rankings-2019, Karazin University is among the 500 best universities in the world. Thus, the university is ranked 481st in the world, and 175th among European universities. According to the UK edition of Times Higher Education-2016, a weekly specializing in higher education, Karazin University entered the list of the world's best universities for the second time out of a group of more than 801. Today, the university has 21 faculties, 124 departments, which train specialists in 115 fields of training and specialization. The university has 4 research institutes (astronomy, biology, social and humanitarian research, chemistry), the central scientific library (funds include over 3.5 million books), the botanical garden, the history museum, the museum of nature, the museum of archeology and ethnography. About 19,000 students study in the faculties, the International Education Center, the e-Learning Center, the Pre-University Training Center, of which about 4,300 are foreign students. 372 doctors of science, professors, more than 1000 candidates in sciences, associate professors participate in staff training and scientific research. 20 academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine are among the employees of the university. During the years of independence, university scientists received 25 state awards in the field of science and technology. Language of instruction is Ukrainian and English.
